Forget Me, Save The Child

Many years ago, my father decided to invested in a small, one-seater speed boat (1957) Technically, the boat sat one, but my sister, who was 4 years-old, fit nicely between my dad and the steering wheel.

They got quite a way out on the lake and were heading back when the one-seater couldn't handle two and began to sink. My dad, grabbed my sister and began pulling her along as he did a side-stroke. As he screamed for help, the life guard jumped off his perched and hurried to the bank of the lake.

After calling for help repeatedly, when he saw the life guard come to the bank of the lake he yelled. "Forget me. Save the child."

The life guarded calmly called back to my father, who a this point struggled along, trying to keep my sister afloat:

"Sir, stand up."

My father stopped, stood up, only to find that the water was thigh-high.

I love the sense of tragedy when it reveals a final humorous moment. And I love unexpected endings. You had me from the first words.

My entire body was already tensed and prepared for the worst as I opened the story. You made me laugh out loud!

Yes, I too was expecting the worst only to end up smiling and relaxing. Too funny, and I'll always remember to test the bottom, just in case. Thanks!
